GTDB-Tk 2.8.0 available

October 13, 2026

  • GTDB-Tk version 2.8.0 is now available. No new reference data is required (R232).

  • classify and classify_wf now apply the same species-assignment rule and report the same other_related_references; some genomes previously assigned by the ANI screen in classify_wf are now placed in the reference tree. This only affects fuzzy species in condensed genera, whose ANI radius is above the default 95% (4 of 10,000 GlobDB genomes in our tests). See the change log for details.

  • This release restores reporting of other_related_references and warnings for genomes that are not assigned to a species because their ANI falls below the closest representative’s circumscription radius; this information was lost in a previous version.

  • The “outside the ANI radius” warning is now raised only when the query’s ANI exceeds the minimum species radius (~95%) but remains below the closest representative’s radius, and a separate warning distinguishes cases where the ANI is sufficient but the alignment fraction is below threshold.

  • The other_related_references field is now capped at the 50 closest references to avoid very large entries.

GTDB-Tk 2.7.2 available

  • GTDB-Tk version 2.7.2 is now available.

  • This release fixed the “warning_counter” error during the placement in the bacterial backbone reference tree.

  • It removes the –skip_ani_screen option from the test command.

GTDB-Tk 2.7.1 available

  • GTDB-Tk version 2.7.1 is now available.

  • This release fixes an MD5 mismatch in the check_install configuration.

  • Although all genomes are classified with skani, selecting --place_species still requires _bac_gids, _ar_gids, and bac_ar_diff for downstream processing.
